Getting Married in Vermont
On April 7, 2009 Vermont became the fourth state to
legalize same sex marriage and the first to do so by legislative vote rather than by court ruling.
Civil unions entered into
prior to September 1, when the marriage equality law
took effect, will continue to
be recognized as civil unions.
Couples currently in a civil union who want to
be married will need to go through the new marriage
process.
